Start from the quaint town of Montalcino, then head south climbing up to the highest point of the area and our tour. Then we enjoy a long downhill ride passing deep green forests, ancient vineyards, and stone farmhouses until we reach the village of Sant’Angelo in Colle where we can stop for pictures from the famous little wall where the townsfolk meet and chat overlooking the valley of vineyards.
Then we take “Sesta”, the quiet dirt road that runs through the middle of some of the most famous vineyards in the world where great Brunello wines are produced. We ride up and down the gentle hills on this charming road to the Sant’Antimo Abbey where we can rest a little and visit the 8th century church and botanical gardens.
At the winery, you have a private tour where you will meet the owner or one of the staff, a wine expert who guides you through the estate: vineyards, facilities, and aging cellar. At the end of the tour, we have our own reserved area for the tasting lunch, usually with a view.
Here, during the lunch, you taste 4-5 wines (it depends also on the size of the estate) guided by the owner or by an expert, such as a sommelier, who tells you the story of these wines, their characteristics, and best pairings. If necessary, your guide will also provide a brief introduction to the correct way to taste wines as well as an explanation of how the Italian system of wine denominations works.
The last stretch of this ride is the road from the nearby village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate that leads back to Montalcino. Along the way, we are rewarded by the breathtaking views of the Val d’Orcia valley that suddenly opens towards the east with its patchwork of olive groves, fields of grains, and the famous rolling hills dotted with cypress trees.
