Pienza and Montepulciano Cheese and Wine Tour: an intensive day led by locals along the rolling hills of Tuscany

On this private Cheese & Wine tour, we visit the Val d’Orcia valley driving along its famous rolling hills to the small Renaissance village of Pienza, a gem built in the XV century based on an idea of beauty and harmony.

We taste the famous pecorino sheep cheese coming from the fields surrounding the town at a small organic dairy farm. Then we continue on to Montepulciano to visit a small family-run winery and taste the Nobile wines, some of the oldest wines of Italy based on the Sangiovese grape

We will start in the morning around 10 am for the Pienza & Montepulciano Cheese & Wine Tour. Our English-speaking driver guide  will pick you up directly at your accommodation in a luxury and very comfortable Mercedes Benz vehicle. On board, free water and wi-fi internet connection will always be available.

On the drive to the first vineyard, your guide will introduce you to the territory, its history, and its winemaking tradition, but there will also be time to stop here and there to take nice pictures of the Val d’Orcia valley, which is featured in many movies.

At the winery, you will have a private tour where you will meet the owner or one of the staff, a wine expert who will guide you through the estate: vineyards, facilities, and aging cellar. At the end of the tour, we will have our own area reserved for the tasting, usually with a view.

Here, you will taste 3-7 wines (it also depends on the size of the estate) guided by the owner or an expert like the sommelier who will tell the story of these wines, their characteristics, and the best pairings. If necessary, your guide will also briefly introduce you to the correct way to taste wines and explain how the Italian system of denominations works.

During the morning, we will stop in the Old Town of Montepulciano for a stroll to Piazza Grande, a typical Renaissance Tuscan square where you will find the Cathedral and many of the old noble palaces with their underground cellars that you can visit.

Lunch will be in a breathtaking spot at a small organic dairy farm where we will have the chance to taste many different kinds and styles of cheeses made by goat and sheep milk.

Later we will have the chance to visit the stables, the animals, and the cheese production facilities with the owners.

In the afternoon, we will stop in Pienza, a small village built in the XV century thanks to the Pope Pius the II and his idea of beauty and harmony. It is so nice to get lost along the small “viuzze”, the little lanes full of craft shops, or just sit on the walls facing the gorgeous valley admiring the ever-changing colors of the Tuscan countryside.

During the day, you can buy wine directly at the estates at the most reasonable price. We also provide the service to ship wine and cheese directly to your home. We will take care of your wine by storing them in a refrigerated depository until you are back at home to receive it.

At the end of the day we will drive you back to your accommodation around 6 pm.
